INSTRUMENT RATING (IFR)

Enhance Your Skills & Expand Your Flying Capabilities

An Instrument Rating (IFR) equips pilots with the knowledge and experience to safely navigate low-visibility and adverse weather conditions, while strengthening overall flight proficiency. Whether you're working toward a career in aviation or simply increasing your confidence as a pilot, earning your IFR certification is a vital step in your journey.

Why an Instrument Rating Matters

  • Fly with confidence in clouds, fog, and other low-visibility conditions.
  • Improve safety and decision-making with advanced avionics training.
  • Increase career opportunities. IFR is essential for commercial and professional pilots.
  • Deepen your understanding of airspace systems, ATC communication, and navigation.

FAA Requirements (Per FAA Part 61.65)

To qualify for an Instrument Rating, you must hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate (PPL), and read, speak, and understand English fluently.

Training & Flight Experience (Per FAA Part 61.65)

Ground & Flight Training

  • Receive comprehensive ground instruction on IFR procedures and aeronautical knowledge.
  • Complete flight training covering instrument maneuvers, navigation, and emergency procedures.

Flight Experience Requirements

  • 50 Hours Cross-Country as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) (10 hours must be in a helicopter)
  • 40 Hours Actual or Simulated Instrument Time (15 hours must be with a Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument (CFII))

Required IFR Cross-Country Flight

Includes:
Filing an instrument flight plan
Flying 100 NM along airways or routes assigned by ATC
Completing three different types of instrument approaches at three different airports

Final Exams

  • Pass the FAA Instrument Knowledge Test
  • Pass the FAA Practical Test (Check Ride)

Training Aircraft

All IFR training is conducted in our Robinson R44 Raven II, equipped with modern glass cockpit avionics for enhanced visibility and real-world experience.  This setup provides students with hands-on practice in advanced navigation and situational awareness.
